As definitions of visual art constantly change and boundaries of visual culture continue to shift, the USC Roski School of Fine Arts is committed to offering a comprehensive and flexible art program that allows students to pursue their individual interests. Roski School students enter into exciting careers in studio art, curatorial and museum or gallery work, as well as all aspects of design and advertising.
Our program remains rooted in studio and classroom experience. Students work closely with faculty members with a variety of interests and practices who have been selected for artistic excellence and superior teaching ability. In preparing students for the professional world, where the increasing range of options can be both exciting and daunting, we invite resident artists to the school, drawing top visiting artists, designers, curators and critics to campus. In addition, by getting students off campus and into the studios and offices of working professionals through internships, seminars, and independent study, the Roski School prepares students for the challenges of the real world, making our graduates competitive in an increasingly demanding art and media market.
Art majors in the Roski School of Fine Arts may pursue one of two degrees: A Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) or a Bachelor of Arts (BA). Each is a four-year degree and requires the same number of total units. Both involve a solid foundation in studio practice, art history, and critical theory.
The BFA program offers an intense focus on studio art practice. BFA students may choose to concentrate exclusively in one or two studio areas, or may opt for a more integrated program that allows for study in different art areas.
The BA program offers a liberal arts approach to the art major which maintains an emphasis on studio art while allowing students more flexibility in pursuing electives, minors, or double majors outside of art.
